NOTE: This course takes place over two sessions at Possible Worlds: July 17 from 6-9 PM, and July 24 from 6-9 PM.

In the first session of Hypercolour Futures, join artist Eric Francisco of Reflex Editions (Toronto) for an artist talk and workshop exploring experimental publishing and one’s relationship with place through the synthesis of photography, text, and abstraction.

SESSION INFO

Drawing from the abstract practice of psychogeography—an experimental exploration of environments to uncover hidden meanings and emotional landscapes—as well as historical and contemporary influences such as the Situationist International, Surrealism, and Fluxus, Eric will explore how artist’s books can function as re-imagined landscapes, offering new ways to navigate and experience place.

Participants will engage in a facilitated experimental image-text writing activity that incorporates ancestral knowledge, photography, and automatic writing, followed by a group discussion and collaborative book sequencing session.

The session will culminate in a Risograph-printed collective publication that participants will have the opportunity to collate, bind and take home copies.

Eric will also speak about his artist publishing practice, including the formation of Reflex Editions, a Toronto-based DIY publishing collective that functions as a creative space for exploring the collaborative and experimental potential of handmade, small-edition publications and ephemera. He will discuss how wandering, photography, recontextualization, writing, and collaboration inform his own artistic bookmaking.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Participants will be asked to submit in advance two landscape photographs (can be of the same place or different from each other) that are drawn from an existing body of work, personal or found archives, or new captures. The landscape subject can be urban and/or natural, personal and/or political, poetic and/or literal, documentary and/or metaphorical, banal and/or magical, absurd and/or monumental. These will be printed and will be given to the respective participants during the workshop to use as reference points.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

All are welcome. No experience is necessary and all levels of creativity are welcome.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Eric Francisco is an artist-publisher and graphic designer whose research-driven practice synthesizes artists’ books, photography, printmaking, and writing to transform everyday situations and immediate landscapes into personal poetics. SESSION INFO

Note: Priority for registration will be given to queer participants.

Can a book be a theatre, a space of activation and action? Can a puppet be a placard, a medium of dissent, an object to enact as resistance? In the third session of Hypercolour Futures, join artists Jenny Lin and Eloisa Aquino of B&D Press (Montreal) for an artist talk and workshop in which participants will be guided in building a tunnel book as a portable theatre, along with paper puppets and a short script / statement / poem they will collaboratively enact.

This session will include a viewing of “The Tunnel” (a paper puppet performance by Jenny and Eloisa), a presentation and discussion on puppets in protest and queer resistance, writing and sketching exercises, structure building and puppet creation.

Jenny and Eloisa will also speak about their artist publishing practice, from founding B&D Press in 2009, to participating in art fairs in Canada and internationally, to actively engaging with the art and zine community, to centering queer voices and experimental artists in their work.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

All materials will be provided at the session.

SUMMER SCHOOL // Reimagining Institutions: Publishing as a Civic Practice

REGISTER YOUR SPOT

If the session is sold out or you would like to be informed of future sessions on this topic, please add your name to the wait list:

In what ways can experimental publishing be a form of creative civic practice? In the last session of Hypercolour Futures, join artist Melanie Yugo (Ottawa/Toronto) for an artist talk and workshop on how printed matter - on and off the page - can act as a catalyst for collectively reimagining institutional structures and creating new community platforms.

SESSION INFO

Inspired by speculative fiction, community design and art manifestos, participants will be invited to think critically about institutions, structures and systems through a facilitated zinemaking activity. Participants will then collectively examine existing art/cultural institutions and structures through a non-Western lens and reimagine what new platforms or initiatives could look like.

The workshop will culminate in the creation of a collective arts manifesto, as a Risograph-printed publication and on screenprinted t-shirts, intended to be disseminated widely and publicly.

Melanie will also speak about her artist publishing practice, founding community-driven art platforms, bridging art and public policy interventions within institutions, and centering historically marginalized voices in her work.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Melanie Yugo is a researcher, artist, educator and multidisciplinary programmer. Moving between personal diasporic storytelling and reimagining institutional structures, she aims to promote more inclusive knowledge, methodologies and forms through research, publishing, printmaking and the creation of independent art platforms. Melanie co-founded and directs Object//Project Art Book Fair and Possible Worlds, a community-driven project space, shop and publisher. In parallel, she has built a 20+ year career in progressive social and cultural public policy focused on removing barriers to representation and participation in shaping Canadian art, culture, citizenship and identity. WORKSHOP FACILITATOR

"I came across a book of cyanotypes by Anna Atkins in 2016 and have been exploring the medium since. Botanical specimens find their way into my work on-site throughout the year. I have always experimented materially, so I love the surprises that make their way into the prints.”

Emily Rose Michaud is an interdisciplinary artist and educator working at the crossroads of community organization, ecology and civic participation. Her work highlights the social importance of marginal landscapes, engages with land as a living entity, and maintains a practice in ephemeral media. Her body of work encompasses land-based art, installation, drawing, writing, ceramic and intervention. She has exhibited nationally in art galleries, in less formal venues and spaces, and has attracted international media attention for her Roerich Garden Project (Le Champ des Possibles) in Montreal. A documentary about her practice can be seen here.

Emily’s art practice spans painting, drawing, ceramic, sculptural installations, land-based art, writing and imagining a new world into being. She uses art broadly to connect people to place. She finds ground and infinite inspiration in the surrounding landscape of her home region of the Outaouais and in the last 10 years has spent countless hours along the Kichi Sibi (Ottawa) River and its tributaries, compiling a vast body of work on the ecosystem and local watershed. She explores and creates outdoors, year round and many of her artworks are made on-site with foraged materials from the local landscape, in relation to what is around her, as the seasons progress.

In her education work, she specializes in art + nature projects and murals with youth and is a persistent advocate to make cultural programming more present in schools and society. For over 20 years, she’s offered visual art workshops in and out of the institution, as well as worked with youngsters, teens, adults and seniors in all media, for leisure, as emotional outlet, education, and portfolio development.
